Three weeks ago, Momma Summer gave birth to eleven healthy puppies. Today, she is alone.

My heart broke when I took her out of her kennel. In the very next cage were three playful pups. She stopped and stared at them. I saw the question in her eyes; sensed the ache in her soul.

Here is Summer's story: An animal control officer saw Summer and her pups a few weeks back, out on the street -- but in fear, momma ran when she sensed trouble and left behind those nursing babies. How could she take them with her? Back at the shelter, our compassionate and amazing New Hope coordinator gave those babies new hope and found them fosters who would stay up round the clock feeding them. Momma was at large.

Luckily for Summer, that same officer found her two days later. Her body scarred, covered with scabs and ticks, she left those mean streets behind. Look at her, climbing the stairs to freedom, waiting for that someone who will love her gentle ways and take her to safety.

Summer (A1033132) is a Staffordshire mix, a very petite girl, 4 years old, as sweet and trusting and loving as can be and totally devoted once she gets to know you. With a wagging tail she will follow you around. Summer nursed her puppies; now we must nurse her back to happiness.

Call the South L.A. shelter now at (213) 485-0117 or -0119 and offer this defeated momma a chance at a new life. Please let me know that you can save her -- as people will be asking. Thanks for caring about these defeated and defenseless dogs that fill our shelters.
